Herb (June 10, 2018) Licensed cannabis businesses in California who are complying with the state’s regulations are growing increasingly frustrated with the thriving black market. As a result, some licensed dispensaries have filed complaints with the California Bureau of Cannabis Control to try and eradicate their illegal competitors.

SCV TV (June 8, 2018) The County of Los Angeles Office of Cannabis Management, operated within the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, recently hosted the first L.A. County Cannabis Regulators Roundtable at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration. This first-of-its-kind roundtable brought together more than 60 participants from cities across Southern California, LA County departments, and state agencies to discuss cross-jurisdictional issues and to share regulatory ideas as cannabis legalization rolls out across the state.

VC Star (June 10, 2018) The Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks city councils have placed measures on their cities’ Nov. 6 ballots that will ask voters whether marijuana businesses in their respective towns should be taxed. The two east Ventura County councils voted to do so last week.

Inc. (June 8, 2018) Ever since Donald Trump took office as 45th president of the United States, cannabis industry entrepreneurs, as well as ordinary cannabis users, have worried that the Trump administration might punish them for buying, selling, growing, or using marijuana. Now, in a comment to reporters, Trump has indicated he might support a bill that would leave marijuana laws and enforcement to the states.

My Champlain Valley (June 8, 2018) President Donald Trump said Friday that he was inclined to support a bipartisan effort in Congress to ease the U.S. ban on marijuana, a proposal that would dramatically reshape the nation’s legal landscape for pot users and businesses. The federal ban that puts marijuana on the same level as LSD and heroin has created a conflict with about 30 states that have legalized pot in some form, creating a two-tiered enforcement system at the state and federal levels.

WFAA (June 10, 2018) Congressman Michael Burgess, R-Denton County, said it is time for the federal government to finally investigate the medicinal benefits of cannabis. Republicans, who have long opposed legalization of marijuana in any form, have slowly begun to reconsider – at least the medicinal benefits of cannabis to help patients when pharmaceuticals cannot.

Quartzy (June 9, 2018) “CBD is the new avocado toast,” stated the caption on an Instagram that recently appeared in my feed—a photo of a chalkboard outside at a Williamsburg, Brooklyn café advertising a “magical CBD latte.” CBD (or cannabidiol), if you’ve not yet encountered it, is a non-psychotropic chemical compound that occurs naturally in cannabis, and is currently touted in everything from pet-calming drops to ache-alleviating muscle rubs and, yes, “magical” lattes.

Houston Chronicle (June 11, 2018) What’s it going to take for us to recognize the value of cannabis in combating the opioid epidemic? Two recent studies published in the American Medical Association’s peer-reviewed journal demonstrate that opioid use is lower in states where doctors can recommend medical cannabis. The findings back up previous studies showing these same states have seen a 25 percent reduction in opioid overdose deaths, and 23 percent fewer non-fatal opioid hospitalizations.

Herb (June 9, 2018) It should come as no surprise that Mormons oppose the use of cannabis, as the faith forbids followers from any recreational drug use. Mormons are also forbidden from drinking alcohol, with some members going as far as abstaining from caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, and soda. Due to its high Mormon population, cannabis remains illegal in Utah.

Enid News & Eagle (June 10, 2018)  If Oklahomans pass State Question 788 on June 26 they will open the door to medical marijuana in the state. But, passing SQ788 won’t put Oklahoma in new territory for the use of marijuana for medical purposes. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), people have used cannabis, also called marijuana, “for a variety of health conditions for at least 3,000 years,” with another NIH report citing as many as 5,000 years.

Herb (June 11, 2018) Things got wild in the Knesset recently. During a committee discussion on changes to Israel’s medical cannabis rules, an impassioned Israeli cannabis activist chugged an entire bottle of cannabis oil, according to the Jerusalem Post. “I have cannabis medical oil that contains 30% THC,” he said. “You say it’s a dangerous drug, what will happen to me if I consume it?”
